Moussette, Charles. Orage du 12 Mai 1886. La Foudre en Spirale. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1887. Square 8vo., 8 pp.; two orig. prints tipped in, orig. wrpps. bound in to recent boards with gilt title to spine, signed and inscribed in pen by author.
Mousette’s theories about lightning were based on photographic techniques he pioneered in the 1880s. The text of this report was first published in the Comptes rendus des Séances de l’Académie des Sciences in July 1886. To counter strong opposition from his colleagues he published this booklet the following year with new notes and 2 original albumen silver prints from a glass negative made during the storm in May 1886 (only four years after the first photograph of lightning was achieved). A full print of the negative is followed by an enlargement of branching lightning; an enlargement from the same negative is in the Metropolitan Museum collection.
