Four Documents Reporting the Deaths of Chinese Laborers in Cuba.

Documenting the deaths of Chinese laborers under suspicious circumstances in Cuba during their indenture contracts. One was a prisoner; another required identification; and the third was hanged. The specific conditions of their deaths are discussed, including whether the hanging could be considered suicide.

Comprised of: 

  1. Two manuscript letters reporting the death of the colono Ildefonoso by hanging, Guamacaro, Matanzas, March 1857. 29.5 x 20.5 cm and 20.8 x 15.5 cm. The latter with text recto and verso. Toned with small losses or fraying at edges. 

  2. Partially printed form, completed in manuscript ink, reporting the death of the prisoner Rafael, a native of Macau, at the Real Hospital de Caridad de San Felipe y Santiago, May 31, 1875. Wormhole damage.

  3. Manuscript letter asking for compliance with an order to identify the body of Pedro, an Asian man who died earlier in the month. Yguero, January 27, 1867. Toned, v minor wormholes.
