New Acquisitions: Latin America

New Acquisitions: Latin America

New acquisitions in Latin Americana, including offerings in women's and labor history; manuscript items related to Chinese indentured labor in pre-abolition Cuba; and a substantial group of rare Latin American science fiction.

The science fiction selection includes landmarks in the genre as well as a number of items from the 80s, 90s, and 00s: pivotal decades marked by a rapid expansion of the sf community in Latin America with the rise of fanzines and internet culture. Together these conditions created a network for writers and illustrators to connect and publish, circumventing traditional gatekeepers in the industry. Many examples here feature early computer graphic design; others were published during challenging political and economic conditions, including Chilean and Argentinian dictatorships or juntas. They are often referred to in current anthologies as important antecedents for contemporary Latin American sf but are difficult to source.
