Tonini, Andrés, Ed. ¡Nahual!
An early, irregularly published zine with writing by graduate? students and some faculty at UNAM. The stated editorial aim was to “pretende ser un trampolín para romper el silencio” and create a space for Mexican creators of science fiction and fantasy. It ran for approximately six issues from 1995-1998/9. The title clearly references Mesoamerican/Toltec spiritual traditions, and functions as a kind of contemporary indigenismo.
One of the primary supporters and contributors was Arturo César Rojas (1955-2024), a pioneer of Mexican science fiction in the 1980s. His novel xxyëröddny, donde el gran sueño se enraiza is considered the first gay science fiction published in Mexico.
