Carrasco Cuellar, Juan M. Hacia la República Socialista de los Trabajadores: Obra para obreros soldados y campesinos, oratoria revolucionaria socialista. México, D.F.: DAPP [Departamento Autónomo de Publicidad y Propaganda] [Talleres Gráficos de la Nación], 1938. 19.5 cm, 346, [6] pp.; 14 plates, incl. portrait frontispiece of Carrasco, and 13 illustrated pls. by Francisco Montoya, Alberto Toledo Ochoa, Alfonso Cervantes Flores, and Alfredo Leo Velázquez, 1 in color, 3 folding. Signed inscription on fep to another Col. mentioning revolution and army, possibly author's signature? Color illus. wrapper. Minor turning at lower corner, affecting front matter, else uniformly toned and relatively fresh. This worker's primer on socialism and the Mexican army is a fascinating illustrated artifact of President Lázaro Cárdenas's successful efforts to subordinate the military within his socialist political party, Partido Nacional Revolucionario. It is also an example of the significant financial commitments that Cárdenas made to the state printing presses, Talleres Gráficos de la Nación (TGN) and the propaganda department (DAPP). The graphic arts union and the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios worked together with Cárdenas (who had been a typographer's apprentice before joining the army) to ensure bookmaking was well paid and respected work. The present volume's colophon thanks TGN members by name, including the typographer, prensistas, and master binder, Ignacio Gutiérrez. SOLD
