Tratado clínico iconográfico de dermatología quirúrgica
Tratado clínico iconográfico de dermatología quirúrgica
First Spanish medical textbook with clinical photographs.
Giné y Partagás, Juan. Tratado clínico iconográfico de dermatología quirúrgica. Barcelona: Establecimiento Tipografico La Academia de Evaristo Ullastres. 8vo, xii, [4], (13)-838 pp.; brown morocco, gilt spine, marbled-end papers. Juan Giné was a progressive physician in Barcelona when he wrote this important medical textbook containing 200 recipes for dermatological medicines. Influenced by French medical photography, Giné hoped to include extensive clinical photographs in his volume. Unfortunately, the Santa Cruz Hospital where he worked banned the project, calling the representation of venereal diseases (e.g. herpes) immoral because of its association with prostitutes. In the end, Giné was able to realize only 3 albumen prints for this rare volume—the rest of the figures are illustrated in 17 lithographic plates (12 chromo). OCLC locates only 2 copies in North America. SOLD
