El Movimento Estridentista
Germán List Arzubide, [1927]
List Arzubide, Germán. El Movimento Estridentista. Xalapa, Veracruz; Mexico: Ediciones de Horizonte, [1926/1927]. First edition. 8vo, 106 pp.; profusely illus., a few in color, incl. 2 color pls., tipped in; missing orig. wrappers, half-title with small loss at top-edge, first and last pages heavily foxed.
A reading copy of this important illustrated chronicle of Estridentista, the avantgarde Mexican arts movement. Even without wraps, Arzubide’s history is a beautifully realized book. Scores of vibrant illustrations are accompanied by descriptions of Estridentista founder, Manuel Maples Arce, the movement’s headquarters at El Café de Nadie in Mexico City, and its aesthetic principles.
As described by the International Center for the Arts of the Americas, “a good number of the illustrations [...] are unique, given the loss of a large portion of the works by the painters and engravers associated with the group, especially oil paintings.”
